An Invitation to Journey Through Art

Spokane-based artist Ben Joyce, a Gonzaga University alumnus, introduces us to his innovative style through a compelling body of work known as "abstract topophilia"—a term he coined to express his profound affection for place. This collection is deeply personal, inspired by a transformative experience in Florence while studying abroad in college, where Joyce first encountered the aerial perspective that now defines his art. That pivotal moment, when the cityscape became a playground of infinite views, fundamentally altered his creative vision and future.

Florence, a city synonymous with artistic rebirth, served as the birthplace of Joyce's distinctive style. It was here, after immersing himself in the city’s rich culture, that the concept of aerial perspective first took root. Two years later, Joyce translated this concept onto canvas. What began as a new way of seeing the world evolved into a dynamic approach that captures urban landscapes from above, revealing not just the surface but also what lies hidden from conventional viewpoints.

The PLACE Collection is both a personal and professional milestone, representing the culmination of five years of dedicated work and two decades of artistic evolution. This series is a global odyssey, encompassing cities from New York City to Seattle, Florence to Rome, Butte to the island of Maui, and Los Angeles. Each piece is a tribute to locales that have significantly shaped Joyce's artistic journey.

In this collection, Joyce explores the composition of time, acknowledging its profound impact on place. He ponders whether the awareness of time may be the central theme of this body of work. The COVID-19 pandemic, which drastically altered the story and landscape of the cities Joyce was visiting, served as a poignant reminder of time's impact. The pandemic reshaped urban environments and personal experiences, adding a new layer of meaning to Joyce’s work. His art reflects not just the static essence of these locations but also their evolving nature as influenced by time and global events.

A process five years in the making

This collection is not merely about showcasing cities; it’s about inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationships with the places they cherish.

The PLACE Collection is a testament to Joyce’s growth as an artist. It represents not only a stylistic evolution but also a shift in perspective. For Joyce, this project is a mid-career exploration, driven by a desire to understand and represent the profound connection people have with their environments. Over 20 years of his career laid the groundwork for this collection, providing him with the experience and network necessary to embark on such an ambitious project.

The artwork in this collection is intentionally large, reflecting the expansive nature of Joyce’s vision. His signature style, characterized by intricate aerial perspectives and abstract forms, is showcased on a grand scale. These pieces are not confined by traditional frames; instead, they exist as fragmented glimpses of the world, emphasizing that geography and experiences cannot be fully contained within any single boundary.

As viewers engage with The PLACE Collection, they are encouraged to delve deeper into the layers of each piece, discovering new perspectives and connections. Joyce’s hope is that this collection will inspire introspection and a greater appreciation for the places that hold personal significance to each individual.
In essence, The PLACE Collection is an invitation to explore the intersection of art, place, and personal experience. It serves as both a reflection of Joyce’s artistic journey and a call for viewers to find their own stories within the landscapes depicted.
